13 January 2004.Basra, Iraq..Gun crime victims..Crime in Basra continues to take a heavy toll on inhabitants..Robbery and carjacking are frequently perpertrated at gunpoint...Many victims of crime are killed during the incidents, Basra's main hospital treats between 5 and 7 surviving gunshot victims each evening. .A local man who had a narrow escape when a bullet passed within centimeters of his heart lies in a critical condition attached to a chest drain in the emergency room at Basra's main hospital.
