• The Hadzabe are a tribe of hunter gatherers numbering as few as 1500 members, of those perhaps just 300 still survive year round entirely from their traditional ways of obtaining food. Many supplement the meagre results of their hunting and foraging during the dry season when game is sparse by demonstrating their way of life to visiting tourists. The Hadzabe’s way of life is thought to have remained largely unchanged for the past 10,000 years but is now in peril as the modern world encroaches and corrupts their non materialism and self sufficiency. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
• 09 October 2004
Kabul, Afghanistan.
Election day in Kabul.

Afghanistans historic Presidential elections saw both men and women heading to the polling stations. Many of the women were wearing traditional burka's. They had to lift the veils in order to have their identity checked before proceeding with their vote. Both men and women had their thumbnails painted to avoid repetitious voting. Reports circulated that the ink had not proved to be indelible and that voters were simply rubbing it off.

By mid afternoon 15 candidates had pulled out of the running amidst allegations of fraud.
• 16 October 2004,Herat, Afghanistan.Mental health care/Afghanistan.After decades of war and deprivation Afghanistan's mental health programs struggle to provide any real relief or treatment for those suffering from various psychological problems. Some of the patients symptoms have been caused by the trauma of witnessing their family members killed during the years of fighting, for others the problems are a result of heavy drug abuse. At this time it is estimated that there are 62,000 addicted to drugs in Kabul alone. Treatment for the mentally disabled is almost non existent, it consists rather of containment and basic health care. The patients are fed, have a roof over their heads and are kept separate from the general public, some are kept chained together to prevent escape. Local clinics provide antibiotic vaccinations to help prevent infections caused by the unclean living conditions, they also treat a range of injuries that the patients often inflict on themselves and each other. Whilst some medicines are available to help correct chemical imbalances that affect the mental state these are limited in quantity and effectiveness. Counseling and therapy were not forms of treatment offered in any of the institutions visited.

A mine clearance team from the Halo Trust have been working for more than a year in the small village of Kohe Safi and have removed 800 mines and 118 unexploded bombs. Kohe Safi, Afghanistan on the 1st of November 2007..Throughout the country the Halo Trust alone is working to clear 90 million square meters of mine fields containing some 640,000 mines, they estimate it will take them 18 years to complete this task..A break through in mine detection not seen since World War II is due to speed things up in the coming year when Halo become the first civllian organisation to use H-STAMIDS (The Handheld Stand-Off Mine Detection System) a new combination tool with a metal detector and ground penetrating radar system. The H-STAMIDS remain classified and during recent trails in Afghanistan the device had to be returned to the US military at the end of each day. The new equipment should make mine clearance 2-3 times faster...
