  • In one of the most mixed raced cities in Iraq tensions are rising as Arabs are being forced from their homes by returning Kurdish refugees. The population of the city is split between the Turkomans, Arabs and Kurds, it is one of Iraq richest oil regions and every group is keen to grab as big a share as possible. Abdul Muttarib Jabbar, 45 is a Kurd who along with his family have been living in Iran since 1975 when they fled persecution. moving in. Today he and his family unload their possessions ready to start their lives over in Kirkuk. Galala aged 17 has grown up in Iran she now has to contemplate a new life in what Kurds believe to be their land. As one of the most persecuted races on earth simply moving from one country to another has never solved the ongoing pressures faced by the Kurdish people. <br />

  • Lola Alvarez, spokesperson for Somonte and her great neice Beatriz..As a result of Spain's prolonged and worsening economic crisis a cooperative called Somonte has formed. Approximately a year ago they occupied land and farm buildings near the village of Palma del Rio in Cordoba Province. They have begun to manually cultivate some of the land and are now able to grow enough food to support their community of 20 plus members. Excess food, particularly red peppers which are a speciality of the COOP are taken and sold at market along with other produce from the farm. In addition to the humans who have reclaimed the land and are living together in the commune there is a small selection of livestock such as chickens, sheep, goats and a lone donkey called Manolo. The individuals who make up the cooperative come from various parts of Spain and diverse backgrounds. They are often joined by international visitors who spend anything from a few days to a few weeks working alongside them in support of their ideas and backing them in their fight against the severe economic problems that have left vast numbers of Spaniards unemployed and many attempting to survive below the poverty line and with insufficient food to eat as a result. Palma del Rio, Cordoba, Andalucia, Spain on the 19th of September 2012.
