Lebanon

On the 12th July 2006 two Israeli soldiers were captured by Hezbollah fighters in the area of Aitaa al-Chaab.
Israel countered this with what it described as a 'proportionate response'. This response included the destruction by airstrikes and shelling of the airport, roads, bridges, factories and other infrastructure throughout the country but particularly south of the Litani River.
More than one million people fled their homes; some moved to temporary refugee camps whilst those that could left the country.

  • 18th August 2006&#xA;Nabatieh, Lebanon&#xA;Unexploded ordanance&#xA;&#xA;Southern Lebanon is littered with unexploded bombs after the month long Israeli bombardment. Many areas are strewn with 'Cluster Bombs', small bomlets that are dispersed by a larger bomb. Many do not explode on impact and are driven over, kicked or picked up by children. They are very unstable and are packed with ball bearing-like shapnel which upon detonation can spread up to 100 yards. The Lebanese Army today handed out leaflets at roadblocks warning the population to take care and not to touch any unusual looking devices.<br />
