Avian Flu Update
The owner of a fighting cock shows off his bird and its passport in Chainat, Thailand on the 15th Dec 2006. The passport contains the birds photograph and a certificate proving it has been tested for Avian Flu.
Whilst Avian Flu has been largely forgotten by the rest of the world in Thailand and Indonesia it is still an important issue. Thailand has strict control measures such as disinfection at all poultry farming sites, passports for fighting cocks and regular testing and has as a result got AI under control. Indonesia has little control and AI is frequent, programmes put in place by the Food and Agriculture Organisation is working on the problem. Surveillance and response units go out into the communities testing birds and destroying those that display symptoms.
